Birch Aquarium’s Game-Changing New Gallery is Here

The ocean just got a whole lot closer to home, and the Adam R. Scripps Living Seas Gallery is proof that some transformations are worth the wait. After months of anticipation and construction dust, Birch Aquarium has officially opened the doors to this stunning new experience, and we’re already planning our next visit.

What Makes This Different

This isn’t just a refresh of the beloved Hall of Fishes we all remember. The $18.7 million transformation represents the largest capital project in Birch Aquarium’s history, and honestly, it shows.

The new Living Seas Gallery takes us on an immersive journey through the Pacific Ocean that feels more like stepping into an underwater world than observing it from the outside.

The centerpiece that has us most excited? A massive Tropical Coral habitat that’s four times larger than what was there before. We’re talking about a living, breathing ecosystem that captures your attention the moment you walk in.

Add to that the Tropical Mangrove roots that seem to grow right out of the gallery walls, and you’ve got an experience that blurs the line between aquarium and ocean floor.

The Stars of the Show

Every great aquarium needs its headliners, and Living Seas delivers. The Giant Pacific Octopus gets its own dedicated space where we can peek into their mysterious world. There’s something mesmerizing about watching these intelligent creatures navigate their habitat, and the new setup gives us front-row seats to their daily routines.

The Scripps Pier habitat offers something we’ve never seen before—an up-close look at life beneath the iconic pier. It’s like getting a diver’s perspective without the wetsuit, showing us the ecosystem that thrives on those familiar pilings we see every time we visit La Jolla.

And let’s talk about that Open Ocean habitat. Watching schools of fish move in perfect synchronization alongside the aquarium’s rescued Loggerhead Sea Turtle creates those peaceful moments that remind us why we love the ocean in the first place.

Beyond the Tanks

What sets Living Seas apart is how it connects the dots between what we’re seeing and the cutting-edge research happening right down the hill at Scripps Institution of Oceanography. The exhibition showcases real scientific work, from efforts to save Sunflower Sea Stars to research connecting jellies to cancer treatment.

It’s the kind of behind-the-scenes access that makes us appreciate both the beauty and importance of marine science.

The tech upgrades are pretty impressive too. Digital projections and UV-responsive wallpaper create immersive elements throughout the gallery, and the space can shift from day to nighttime settings to highlight what happens in the ocean after dark.

These aren’t just flashy add-ons—they genuinely enhance the experience and help tell the story of ocean life in ways we haven’t seen before.

A Legacy Worth Celebrating

The naming of the gallery honors The Adam R. Scripps Foundation’s generous support, continuing a family legacy that stretches back over a century.

The Scripps family’s vision for a public aquarium was actually written into Scripps Institution of Oceanography’s original charter back in 1903, making this new gallery a full-circle moment in the institution’s history.
